First impressions are everything. The first thing people notice when they walk into your place of business is your lawn. Sloppy, unkempt lawns can be enough to scare potential clients away. On the other hand, a well-maintained lawn will give you back more than what you invest in maintaining it. There are plenty of companies that will service commercial property and provide excellent lawn care. However, you should also have a basic understanding of how to care for it throughout the year. Here are some useful tips to remember:
Spring
Prep your materials and lawn for mowing in the early days of spring. Sharpen your mower blades to make sure that it can make clean cuts. Otherwise, a dull blade tears the grass and leaves jagged edges which discolor lawns and invite pathogens. Clean up your lawn by removing twigs and leaves that have accumulated on it. Wet leaves can smother a lawn if they remain there. Clearing up debris also ensures that your turf can absorb fertilizer and herbicides.
Summer
Warm summer weather is when the larvae stages of several insects start feeding on the tender root system of your lawn. Lawns affected by grub worms tend to show browning and wilting patches. You can get rid of some species of grubs by using milk spore, which is an environmentally friendly way to control their presence. Although the heat during this time might make you want to water your lawn often, you should actually be doing the opposite. Deep yet infrequent watering is much better for your lawn than frequent sprinkles which promote shallow root growth. Lawns generally need only about an inch of water a week. Any less than that and they will go dormant.
Summer is the most demanding time for lawn upkeep. You should water your lawn in the early mornings or night to avoid evaporation. If you’re experiencing a wet, cool summer, make sure to apply fertiliser and moss killer during late spring. It should last until autumn. If you’re having a warm, dry summer, then additional fertiliser applications might be necessary because of nutrient drain.
Fall
The cooler months require less maintenance for your lawn, but you should still pay attention to its needs. The main concern during the fall is to get rid of fallen leaves and debris or they can suffocate your lawn if not dealt with properly. Make sure to aerate your lawn using a garden fork and remove dead moss by raking your lawn’s surface with a rake. Leave the grass slightly higher than normal when you proceed with the last cut of the year.
Winter
Winter is the least labor-intensive month for lawn care. The winter months are best for planning out a new lawn to sow. Be careful not to walk on your lawn if it has frosted over as this can severely damage the grass. As usual, keep your lawn free from fallen leaves and debris. Take note also of any water puddles as this is a sign of compacted soil.
Lawns need time and attention to keep them looking their finest, but it’ll all be worth it for your business.
